How do you DM someone on Twitter (X) who does not follow you?

We send first messages to people who do not follow the sender all day, so this is the setting we bump into most.

How to send a DM on X (Twitter)

1. Open their profile.
2. Tap the message icon next to Follow. On x.com it is a speech bubble.
3. Type your message and send.

The same taps work on the web, iPhone and Android. From your inbox instead: open Messages, start a new message, and search their name. X may ask you to verify your phone number the first time.

If they follow you, the DM goes straight to their inbox. If they do not, it lands as a request in their Requests folder, which they only see if they open it. How to open DMs on Twitter shows that side.

When can you DM someone who does not follow you?

X's help page lists four cases. Someone you do not follow can get your DM if:

• They turned on Receive messages from anyone.
• They take DMs from Verified users, and you have a blue check.
• They sent you a DM before.
• You are both in one Premium Business team.

If none apply, the message icon does not show on their profile. No error, no warning. Nothing on your side unlocks it: not a paid plan, not a new account, not a follow, unless they follow back.

The ten second check before you message someone on Twitter

1. Open their profile. Message icon next to Follow? You can send. No icon? Stop.
2. Do they follow you? Then your DM goes straight to their inbox.
3. Have they DMed you before? Reply in that thread.
4. Do you have a blue check? Then Verified-only accounts show you the icon too.

Why "sent" does not mean "seen"

X sorts a stranger's requests into a Priority tab and a Hidden tab. Plenty of people never open Hidden. You get no read receipt until they accept.

Media stays hidden until they accept, so a first DM should be plain text: one short question, no link. Our 12 cold DM scripts are written that way.

If the DM would not send at all, that is a different problem: why a DM says not sent.

No message button? Four ways in

1. Reply to one of their posts. Short and real.
2. Follow them and wait. If they follow back, the icon appears.
3. Get a blue check. If they take DMs from Verified users only, Premium ($8 a month, US) unlocks the icon after X's review.
4. Find another channel. Their bio often lists an email or a site. A closed inbox is a choice.

Do you need Premium?

No. A free account can DM anyone whose DMs are open to everyone. The blue check does one job: it opens the Verified-only row. Premium also lifts your cap on first messages to non-followers.

What changes with a list

• The cap. 7 first messages a day on a free account, 35 on Premium. Number 8, or number 36, does not send.
• Duplicates. The same message, or the same link, to several accounts can freeze your sending for at least 30 minutes.
• Tracking. You have to know who you already wrote to. Five DM tools compared shows what does that for you.

Do this today: open the profile of the next person you want to write to. If the message icon is there, send one plain line with no link. If it is not, reply to one of their posts instead.

FAQ

Why is there no message button on their profile?

Because their DM setting shuts you out, and it is their setting, not yours. Either their DMs are open only to people they follow, or only to Verified users and you have no check. A follow from you changes nothing unless they follow back. Reply to a post, or find an email in their bio.

Why does my DM go to their message requests?

Because they do not follow you. X treats a first message from a non-follower as a request and files it under Requests. Grok then sorts it into a Priority or a Hidden tab. Media stays hidden and you get no read receipt until they accept. Keep the first line plain, short and free of links.

Can you DM someone who has blocked you?

No. X shows a notice on their profile when you are blocked, and a message to them will not send. There is no setting on your side that changes that, and a second account written for the purpose is what X's rules call evasion. Move on to the next person.

Does a blue check let you DM anyone?

No. It does two things for DMs. It opens inboxes set to Verified users only. And it lifts your cap on first messages to non-followers from 7 to 35 a day. Someone whose DMs are open only to people they follow still shows you no message icon, check or not.
